F.A.Q.'s

Got questions? You’re not alone! Here’s everything you’ve wanted to know about kava, kratom, and the Mai Kai experience…

Welcome to Mai Kai, Georgia’s tropical escape for kava, kratom, and good vibes. Whether you’re curious about how kava works, what to expect on your first visit, or just want to learn about our alcohol-free alternatives, these FAQs have you covered.

What is kava, and where does it come from?

Kava is a root from the South Pacific islands, where it’s been used for centuries in ceremonies and social gatherings. It’s known for promoting relaxation, calm, and connection. At Mai Kai, we serve traditional, high-quality kava made fresh in store for smooth, earthy shells that bring the island vibes right to Georgia. Crafted from noble kava root, perfect for kava enthusiasts and first timers visiting Mai Kai Kava Lounge in Athens GA. Expand your understanding today.

How does kava make you feel?

Kava gently relaxes you without any groggy feelings. Unlike alcohol, it doesn’t dull your senses, instead it brings a peaceful, clear headed feeling that helps you feel happy and social. There is a gradual sense of calmness, starting with a slight tingling feeling which leads to feeling more chatty and up lifted.

What is kratom, and how does it differ from kava?

Kratom comes from the leaves of a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. While kava helps you unwind, kratom is often used for energy, focus, mood enhancement or pain relief, depending on the strain and serving. Many Mai Kai guests love alternating between the two for balance.

Is kava similar to alcohol?

Kava delivers the same calm and chattiness, without clouding your mind. There’s no hangover, no drunk feeling, and no regrets the next morning. It’s social and relaxing, but completely natural and non-addictive. Mai Kai is a great place to connect and have a good time, without alcohol.

Does kava or kratom contain caffeine?

Nope! Both kava and kratom are 100% caffeine-free. If you’re cutting back on caffeine, they’re great alternatives for natural focus, energy, or elevation without any crash or jitters.

Can you mix kava and kratom together?

You can! Many of our signature drinks blend them beautifully. Kava brings mellow, full body relaxation, while kratom offers a light boost of focus, pain relief, or energy. Together, they create a balanced, feel good experience.

How long do the effects of kava and kratom last?

You’ll usually feel kava within 5–10 minutes, with a relaxed calm lasting a few hours. Kratom can take a little longer to kick in but its effects may last up to 4 hours. Everyone’s body is different, listen to yours and enjoy your beverages.

Can I drive after drinking kava?

Kava promotes relaxation, not intoxication, but everyone reacts differently. If you feel deeply mellow, hang out a bit before you drive, safety first! Mai Kai has plenty of board games and good company while you wait.

Are kava and kratom legal in Georgia?

Yes! Both are fully legal in Georgia and available for responsible adult use. While the legal consumption age on kava is 18+, the legal age to consume our kratom or delta8 products is 21+. Mai Kai only serves premium, organic, lab tested products to ensure quality every time.

Are kava and kratom addictive?

Kava is not addictive and doesn’t create physical dependence. However, extended and excessive use of kratom, specifically extracts, can lead to dependency if it’s overused. This is why we serve responsibly and educate our guests on mindful, balanced use.

What are the benefits of kava for stress and anxiety?

Kava is one of nature’s best chill out drinks. It naturally calms the nervous system, lowers stress, and helps ease social anxiety. Many people enjoy kava as a natural alternative to alcohol or pharmaceuticals for relaxation and peace of mind.

Can kava help with sleep?

Definitely. Kava helps the mind unwind and the body release tension, making it perfect for restful sleep. Drink a shell in the evening and you’ll likely notice deeper, more restorative rest, without morning grogginess.

Are there any side effects or down sides?

Used responsibly, kava and kratom are safe for most adults. Avoid them if you have liver issues, are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications that affect the liver or nervous system. We serve with care and transparency, so ask us anytime.

Can I drink kava or kratom if I’m taking medication?

Kava and kratom may interact with certain prescriptions. And kava and kratom aren’t recommended during pregnancy or while nursing. If you’re taking medication that you may be concerned about, it is best to consult your doctor first.

What’s the age policy at Mai Kai?
